Dr. James P. McGee
Rampage School Shootings and What They Teach Us About Workplace Violence 9:30am-10:45am

Dr. James McGee is the retired Director of Psychology and Director of Law Enforcement and Forensic Services at Sheppard Pratt Hospital, located in Baltimore, Maryland.  For more than 15 years, he served as Chief Psychologist of the Baltimore County Police Department, and he also directed psychological services programs for both the Maryland and Delaware State Police.  Dr. McGee is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Basic and Advanced Hostage Negotiations Training Program, and he has also received FBI training in threat assessment and profiling.  He served as a special consultant to the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Group, and portions of a UNABOMBER Profile he submitted to the FBI were used in search warrants related to that notorious case.  Dr. McGee is a trained Executive Protection Specialist, and he is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Forensic Examiners and the American Board of Professional Psychology.  He is a recipient of the Maryland Governor’s Award for Crime Prevention for his activities in hostage negotiations and crisis response, and he also received a special Unit Citation Medal from the Baltimore County Police Department.  Dr. McGee’s publication of “The Classroom Avenger” which is a study of rampage school shooting incidents across the United States has drawn national recognition.  He is a member of the Gavin DeBecker, Inc. MOSAIC-2000 development team responsible for creating a computer-assisted risk assessment method for use in schools and he directs Forensic Psychological Services for Gavin DeBecker & Associates.

Dr. McGee is one of the country’s leading sports psychologists and he has counseled world class amateur athletes, including Olympic Gold Medal winners.  For more than eight years, he was the team psychologist for the Baltimore Orioles Professional Baseball Team, and he was awarded a World Series ring for his special contribution to the Orioles last World Championship season.  He is the only psychologist ever to receive a World Series ring.  After leaving the Orioles, he became the team psychologist for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League, and the Capitals, along with Dr. McGee, then went on to win their first Division championship in the history of the franchise.

Prior to becoming a psychologist Dr. McGee, who is a licensed pilot, served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps.  There, he was trained as a paratrooper, scuba diver, demolition and special weapons expert, and mountain operations specialist in Force Recon, an elite, deep-penetration reconnaissance and special operations unit.
