Speaker Biographies:
Colleen T. LaBelle, BSN, RN-BC, CARN is the Program Director of the State Technical Assistance Treatment Expansion Office Based Opioid Treatment with Buprenorphine. Her areas of specialization are: addiction, pain, and training and technical support office based practice with buprenorphine using nurse care managers.
She has her Registered Nursing Degree from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing, Brighton MA and her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. She is currently working towards her Advanced Practice Nursing Leadership MSN, expected completion this Spring.
Among her many honors and awards he holds positions on the:
Alexander Y. Walley, M.D., M.Sc., is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and a general internist and addiction medicine specialist at Boston Medical Center. He is the director of the Boston University Addiction Medicine Fellowship program, which trains addiction medicine specialist physicians. He is the director of Inpatient Addiction Consult Service at Boston Medical Center. He does clinical and research-related work on the medical complications of substance use, specifically HIV and overdose.
He provides primary care and office-based buprenorphine treatment for HIV patients at Boston Medical Center and methadone maintenance treatment at Community Substance Abuse Centers. He is the medical director for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Opioid Overdose Prevention Pilot Program. Since 2007, the MDPH program has trained over 30,000 people in Massachusetts’s communities, including active opioid users, people in recovery, and their social networks.
He is also the medical director for several police and fire department naloxone rescue programs in Massachusetts that have documented over 750 overdose rescues with program naloxone since 2010.
Karen MacDonald is a lifelong resident of South Boston. Karen speaks regularly on difficulties in having a son who is a heroin addict. She brings a unique perspective on the opioid crisis. Her stories hope and heartache are very compelling as she watches her son try to remain clean and sober. Her work and that of her daughter Danielle is recognized widely in the South Boston community. Karen is still very active in the community while raising her grandson. Karen was featured in the 2005 HBO documentary South Boston Drug Court.
